Ambanja Panther Chameleons are know to be some of the friendliest of chameleons. They are not recommended for small children or people who want a hand's on pet. Chameleons are not a pet that can be played with as they will only tolerate minimal handling.
Size: The males typically have a body length of 12 to 18 inches while females are slightly smaller at 10 to 14 inches. A healthy male panther chameleon will average between 140 and 180 grams in weight, and a healthy female panther chameleon will weigh around 60 to 100 grams.
Temperament & Personality: They are extremely territorial. They spend most of their lifetime all alone in their territory. They are called ‘panther’ because they are very aggressive. They are hardy species
Cage Requirements: A 24x24x48 cage is needed for an adult Ambanja Panther Chameleon.
Never house together chameleons. They need a need a basking site with a temp of 80-90F. They will need the 5.0 UVB fluorescent bulbs in summer you will need alower wattage bulb. Misting should be done at least 3 times daily; dripping should be done for a few hours daily. An auto misting system is very helpful in making sure your chameleon receives daily misting and a water source even when you’re away. Panthers are a tropical species and need to be maintained in 60-80% humidity. providing a good mix of live plants, vines, and branches. Live plants are important in keeping up the humidity and giving the chameleon a more natural living environment along with security. Some of the most commonly used and available plants include Ficus, Pothos, and Dwarf Umbrellas.
Diet: Daily feeding of crickets, silkworms, mealworms, superworms, waxworms, hornworms, roaches, and flies. A staple diet of crickets and or silkworms. Calcium, D3, and a vitamin supplement should be used. Calcium and D3 should be given twice a week, and a vitamin supplement once per week for young fast growing chameleons. Food items should be lightly dusted before feeding.
Colors: color changes have diversified meanings, with color yellow showing anger or aggression, cyan/blue indicating the individuals wish to impress another. Green color signifies a calm and relaxed attitude, and lighter colors signal its intention to mate. A gravid female carrying eggs is reluctant to mate would turn itself brown or black with stripes of orange.
History: Panther Chameleons are native and endemic to the island of Madagascar (close to Africa), the species has been introduced to the main island of Mauritius and the adjacent Réunion. In Madagascar, they are mostly found in the lowland areas of the east and the northeast, ranging from 80 m to 950 m above sea-level, though less common above 700 m.
